Sheer dumb luck -- I was just there on vacation a month or so ago. We had a good time, and the Yeoman Warders give great tour, but the monument is hideous. On the same trip, we went to Hampton Court, and it felt like if I looked 'round fast enough, I might catch a glimpse of your namesake, or of Thomas Cromwell, plotting in a corner. It was... a little overwhelming, at times.
Please forgive me if I have failed to address Your Eminence in the correct manner. I am but a humble antipodean.
I have been reading the journal of my great great grandfather James Francis Truman Plunket and he mentions that as a very small child he lived for a time in a house in Southampton on the west side of High Street. He goes on to say "tradition said that it had been a palace of Cardinal Wolsey. The walls were wainscoted, and the windows fitted in lead, such as you see in Gothic churches..."
I apologise if I seem presumptuous but did you in fact have such a palace? He did say it was such a place one would expect to find haunted but none of his family did see any ghosts.
Main courtyard of the Tower of London?
ReplyDeleteTappet you obviously know your London. Adjacent to the courtyard is the site of Anne Boleyn's (and others') execution, which now has a memorial.

Hilary
Hilary, an interesting question. I was not aware that I had a Palace in Southampton, but will make further enquiries...
ReplyDeleteTappet, I actually quite like the memorial although it is unusual. I wonder what others think?

It's better than some of the statuary in Trafalgar Square [cough]Alison Lapper[cough]!
